Equal Exchange is a worker-owned cooperative that has been bringing together small farmers and citizen-consumers since 1986. Through their success, they aim to demonstrate the contribution of cooperatives and Fair Trade to a more equitable, democratic, and sustainable world. Equal Exchange forms direct, long-term partnerships with small farmer organizations worldwide. They started with organic coffee, tea, and chocolate, and later expanded to banana, avocado, olive oil, dried fruit, nuts, and more. Products are available online and supplied on a wholesale basis to stores, cafes, offices, churches, and other community partners. Equal Exchange has more than 130 worker owners and a network of citizen-consumers that join together for shared learning, events, and campaigns to build a more democratic food system. They donate 10 percent of pre-tax earnings to mission-aligned not-for-profit organizations and are part of Fair Trade Federation, Green America, Sustainable Business Network of Massachusetts, Provender Alliance, US Federation of Worker Cooperatives, National Organic Coalition, and Fair World Project.

Asali Bali aims to develop and promote the bamboo construction industry by engaging highly skilled artisans from local communities and applying traditional Balinese knowledge in a modern context. The team integrates structural engineers, project managers, and experienced bamboo craftspeople. Together with a network of professional architects and partners, they provide a full spectrum of services from engineering consulting to construction and full project delivery of bamboo structures. Projects include eco resorts, spas, retail boutiques, restaurants, schools, warehouses, offices, bungalows, and more. Asali Bali has developed sustainable approaches to procurement, design, construction, and aftercare. They share this information through online resources and structural bamboo workshops.
Más Compost, Menos Basura prevents waste from entering the Doña Juana landfill in Bogotá, Colombia. They make it easy for homes, restaurants, and companies to compost their food waste by providing air-tight buckets, wood shavings for odor prevention, and weekly pick-up services. In return, they supply bags of compost fertilizer or fresh ecologically grown produce on a quarterly basis. Más Compost, Menos Basura uses their platforms to raise environmental awareness and coordinate local environmental action. They conduct workshops and training programs on home composting, gardening, and related environmental topics and provide logistics support for local environmental partners that offer cooking oil collection, plastic recycling, and refill services. Más Compost, Menos Basura is a social enterprise initiative of the local not-for-profit organization Sugamuxi Tu y Yo.

Social Venture Circle (SVC) is a membership network that connects, empowers, and finances entrepreneurs, investors, and leaders that are working toward a global economy that is regenerative, just, and prosperous for everyone. It was founded in 1987 as the Social Venture Network, a peer organization dedicated to demonstrating the “triple bottom line” potential of valuing people, planet, and profit. In 2018, they merged with Investors’ Circle, the nation’s first impact investing network, and in 2020, they formed an alliance with the American Sustainable Business Council (ASBC) and began combining memberships. ASBC serves as the policy and advocacy group for the alliance, and SVC focuses on connecting entrepreneurs, investors, and corporate leadership teams with the funding and capabilities needed to create businesses that contribute to a regenerative economic system. Social Venture Circle is registered as a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization.

Elvis & Kresse rescues raw materials from landfill, transforms them into ethically handcrafted bags, accessories, and housewares, and donates 50 percent of profits to charities related to the reclaimed materials. They have been working with their signature material, decommissioned London fire hoses, since 2005. They also rescue parachute silk, offset printing blankets, jute and hessian coffee bags, shoe boxes, tea sacks, and auction banners. Since 2017, they have been partnering with the Burberry Foundation to help rescue and transform Burberry leather off-cuts. Profits from the fire house collection are donated to the Fire Fighters Charity, and profits from the leather collection are donated to Barefoot College to train female solar engineers. In 2021, Elvis & Kresse transitioned their headquarters to New Barns Farm to work towards being Net Regenerative by sequestering carbon and improving biodiversity. They are an accredited Living Wage Employer, a certified B Corporation, and a member of Social Enterprise UK.

Yayasan Emas Hitam Indonesia is a grassroots permaculture organization that aims to promote, support and develop regenerative solutions across Indonesia. Their name means “black gold” and refers to their belief that healthy soil is the key to regenerating food systems and communities. Emas Hitam provides permaculture and regenerative agriculture training, design services, and consulting throughout Indonesia and has developed their own project site and farmer community in Petulu village in Bali. They focus on sharing practical, local, and cost-effective techniques to improve farmers’ livelihoods, promote ecological restoration, and help communities adapt to climate change and the Bali water crisis. From their Petulu garden, they offer seeds, compost, fresh produce, value added products, farm-to-table experiences, and Permaculture Garden Days. Emas Hitam Indonesia is registered locally as a not-for-profit organization. They partner with Slow Food Bali, Navdanya International, Ubud Food Festival, IDEP Foundation, Udayana University, Food Tank Bali, Goddess Kitchen, Kiss the Ground, and Alila Hotels.

Homeward Bound of Marin started as a single emergency shelter in 1974 and has evolved to become a leading force in ending homelessness in Marin County, California. They provide shelter, transitional housing, counseling, job training, credit repair and money management classes, and a wide range of other services to adults and families experiencing homelessness. The heart of their job training program is Fresh Starts Culinary Academy, which works closely with their social enterprise ventures: Wagster Treats dog biscuits, The Key Room event space and catering service, Halo HomeMade truffles, honey, and preserves, and Fresh Starts celebrity chef events. Homeward Bound of Marin is registered as 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization and pioneered the first nonprofit IPO, an “Immediate Public Opportunity…to end homelessness” by offering fundraising “shares” to develop new facilities. They have since helped other nonprofits with IPO-style fundraising initiatives. Homeward Bound belongs to local chambers and social enterprise communities like Catalyst Kitchens and REDF.

The Color Caravan is a creative social venture in the Indian Himalayas that supports traditional artisan communities, sustains indigenous craft skills, and empowers rural women. They specialize in handknit and crocheted clothing, accessories, housewares, and toys. Artisans are able to work from home, which enables women to earn additional income while managing their domestic and social responsibilities. The Color Caravan upcycles waste fabrics, works with natural dyes, and prioritizes natural materials like wool, cotton, and jute when possible. In 2018, they started a creative learning and cultural initiative called Kala Jamghat that uses theater, storytelling, art, craft, nature, and music to teach life skills and social awareness to young people in the village of Naggar. The founder of The Color Caravan serves as a mentor and volunteer for multiple social initiatives and craft enterprises and facilitates cultural immersive experiences focusing on indigenous crafts, food, and forest healing. The Color Caravan is part of Flourish and Creative Dignity.
Designs in Mind is a working studio in Shropshire, where adults living with mental health challenges work together on ambitious, experimental art and design projects. Together, they are finding ways to live life, challenge mental health stigmas, and transform what a mental health “service” looks and feels like. Members develop studio skills with print making, textiles, glass, ceramics, wood, wire, and recycled materials, learn to work within a group, and create commissioned artwork, public art spaces, and retail products that are sold online and through Jolt, their high street shop. Tasks are broken down so that on a bad day, when decision making seems impossible, makers can help with backup tasks. Members are creatively challenged and work with purpose, building their self-worth and discovering new aspirations for the future. Designs in Mind offers a virtual studio for new referrals, design workshops, and support from “listen and connect” team members and volunteers. They are a member of Social Enterprise UK.

Amplify is a climate donation tool that amplifies the good of spending with sustainable brands. Conscious consumers are able to quickly create an Amplify account, choose a high-impact climate charity to support, and connect an existing debit or credit card through an encrypted card linking technology. When a purchase is made with a sustainable brand in the Amplify network, the brand automatically donates two percent of the purchase price to their customer’s chosen climate charity through the Amplify software. Brands are able to offer a personalized donation experience and incentivize sustainable spending. Customers are able to easily find and prioritize sustainable brands for everyday goods like food, clothing, personal care, and household items, support the environmental causes they care most about, and track earned donations through their Amplify account. Environmental organizations receive funds to expand their impact. By bringing together this community of changemakers—conscious consumers, sustainable brands, and climate charities—Amplify aims to accelerate our response to the climate crisis.

The Key Room & Catering is a social enterprise of Homeward Bound of Marin that helps low income adults and people transitioning out of homelessness build employment skills and career prospects. They offer a flexible meeting and event venue, a showcase kitchen for chef demonstrations and private cooking parties, and full service catering provided by graduates of Fresh Starts Culinary Academy. The Key Room operates as a certified Bay Area Green Business with efficient lighting and rooftop solar panels for electricity and hot water. Fresh produce is often sourced from their own gardens, and service items are compostable, recyclable, or reusable whenever possible. All proceeds are used to support Homeward Bound, Marin County’s largest provider of shelter and training services for homeless adults and families. The Key Room & Catering is a model member of Catalyst Kitchens, a national affiliate group culinary social enterprises.

Almost Heaven Farms is a permaculture demonstration, training, research, and resource center and self-sustaining farm in the Ilam district of Nepal in the eastern Himalayas. Going beyond sustainable agriculture and organic farming, they work with local farmers to transition to agroecology and regenerative agriculture, adapt to climate change, and restore local soils, water sources, and ecosystems. Almost Heaven Farms also offers design, consulting, and ecological restoration services, four-week permaculture design internships, two-year diplomas, biofertilizer training, fermented food workshops, volunteer experiences, and other hands-on learning opportunities. The farm is known for its organic Nepali kimchi, fermented chili pepper sauce, and mango, pineapple and apple vinegars. They are part of a network of communities committed to regenerative development across the Himalayan bioregion.

Christopher Brosse works with citizens, entrepreneurs, corporations, and other institutions to transition from linear to circular practices. The founder writes articles, gives talks, and conducts training programs on sustainability, upcycling, and the circular economy. He also provides mentoring and consulting support for the development of circular products, services, and communication strategies. Christopher Brosse is the author of La Basura No Existe. Talks and consulting services are provided at reduced rates for low income groups, and 10 percent of the book profits are put in a fund for circular entrepreneurs. Christopher Brosse is part of Social Skin, Premios Latinoamérica Verde, and Next Leaders’ Initiative for Sustainability (NELIS).

Jaggery creates livelihood opportunities for people from disadvantaged communities and transforms industrial waste from northern India into bags, cases, and other functional everyday gear. They source, clean, and repurpose old seat belts, cargo lashing straps, decommissioned military canvas and parachutes, tarpaulins, inflatable bouncy castles, textile offcuts, and other waste materials and use high quality new hardware fittings to ensure durability. Products are designed to use materials as efficiently as possible and minimize waste. Jaggery employs staff from communities that have been discriminated against, what the Indian government calls Other Backward Classes and Economically Disadvanted Sections. They provide fair trade wages, English classes, and training in basic computing skills. Jaggery uses their platforms to raise awareness about waste, fair trade, and the transition to a circular economy. They partner with Trees for the Future to plant a tree for every purchase.

Miharu supports and revives traditional crafts of West Bengal through contemporary design. They specialize in handmade Dhokra brass jewelry and housewares and handwoven Baluchari silk saris and dupattas. Dhokra is a lost wax form of metal casting that has been practiced in India for more than 4,000 years. Miharu jewelry and housewares are made from recycled brass and are packed in recycled fabric bags and plastic free packaging. They support artisans with education for family members, medical expenses, machinery, housing, capacity building, and other needs and donate five percent of profits through GiveIndia. Miharu is certified by Craftmark.

When the founder had her daughter, nicknamed Philly, in 2017, fewer than one percent of children’s books in the United Kingdom featured a black main character. Philly & Friends was created out of the desire to raise well-rounded children who believe they can be anything and the conviction that all children deserve to see themselves and others represented in the books they read, the toys they play with, and the media they consume. In addition to creating children’s products, Philly & Friends writes articles, gives talks, conducts workshops, and offers consulting services to promote diversity in the play room and the classroom. They also empower literacy in partnership with Books 2 Africa. They cultivate a diverse range of crops including coconut, king coconut, four varieties of banana, passionfruit, lime, rose apple, guava, cashew, avocado, soursop, beli, wood apple, mango, paddy, cassava, sweet potato, finger millet, and seasonal legumes, vegetables, spices, and herbs. Thambiliwatte is supporting a farmer network for local women and working with neighboring farmers to transition to organic practices. In the future, they plan to offer ecotourism farm visits and home stays, festivals, and harvest promotions. Thambiliwatte is verified under a local organic participatory guarantee system (PGS).

Redefined Objects aims to redefine the lifecycle of industrial fabric waste and showcase the traditional skills and craftsmanship in different areas of India. Hammillewa Farm in Anuradhapura aims to make it easier for Sri Lankans to access healthy, organic food. They specialize in mango, coconut, banana, watermelon, and free range eggs. Compost is produced onsite, and weeds are managed manually in annual crop areas and through grazing in perennial crop areas. All animals on the farm have free access to pasture and are cared for their entire natural lives. The chickens have a five-acre fenced area with a pond, shade trees, and shelter. Hammillewa Farm provides employment opportunities for people from low income families and training opportunities for university students. They are verified as free range for animal products and organic for crop products under a local participatory guarantee system (PGS).
Halo HomeMades is a social enterprise of Homeward Bound of Marin that helps low income adults and people transitioning out of homelessness gain employment skills for a stable and happy future. They specialize in natural artisanal chocolate truffles, jams, pickles, relishes, barbecue sauce, mole sauce, and honey from their Novato hives. Products are created by students and staff at the Fresh Starts Culinary Academy. All profits are used to support job training, education, and housing for people transitioning out of homelessness in Marin County.

Melissa Gisele Fine Jewelry specializes in simple designs inspired by leaves, pine needles, mountains, lakes, and other elements of nature.

Pangolin Gin crafts artisanal gin to raise awareness about the pangolin, the most trafficked mammal in the world, and help protect it from extinction. The gin is produced in the Paper Mill Distillery in the heart of the Staffordshire Moorelands using African botanicals like honeybush, rooibos, and baobab. Products are shipped plastic free in compostable packaging. For every bottle purchased, a donation is made to pangolin conservation charities working across Africa and Asia. Pangolin Gin has partnered with Born Free so that customers can adopt rescued and orphaned pangolins in the Central African Republic and support their rehabilitation and return to the wild.
