Edible Garden City champions the grow-your-own-food movement in land-scarce and import-dependent Singapore. As a social enterprise, they are dedicated to helping cities become more self-sufficient, growing food in a manner that heals the environment, connecting people with nature, and improving physical and mental health. They design, build, and maintain edible gardens for schools, restaurants, hotels, shopping centers, office buildings, and residential properties and supply fresh herbs, microgreens, and edible flowers to restaurants, bars, and spas. Their Citizen Farm is a space for the local community to learn and grow together. Using a closed loop urban agriculture system, they produce fresh, nutritious vegetables, greens, mushrooms, and more and offer Citizen Box subscriptions for weekly pick up or home delivery. They have worked with the Autism Resource Centre and the Down Syndrome Association of Singapore to provide employment for people with intellectual disabilities. Edible Garden City shares their passion for urban food production by offering inclusive tours and workshops for all ages and abilities and developing farming curricula for local schools.

Social Enterprise Alliance (SEA) of Central Indiana brings together individuals, organizations, and businesses that are creating social change through innovative business practices. They create contemporary clothing and accessories from hemp, a resilient natural plant that produces double the fiber per hectare as cotton, grows twice as quickly, lasts longer, requires 95 percent less water, and is easier to cultivate without synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Stemp is committed to fair trade practices and living wages and works with women-owned businesses throughout their supply chain. This includes strategic partnerships with hemp farmers, yarn spinners, fabric manufacturers, dyeing houses, sustainable packaging suppliers, NGOs, and local artisans. Stemp actively promotes hemp as an alternative to fast fashion. In addition to supplying hemp menswear, womenswear, and accessories through their own retail channels, Stemp offers consulting services, private label manufacturing, wholesale supply, and raw material sourcing services for hemp fabrics and yarns. BoP Hub is a not-for-profit business accelerator platform that aims to create an efficient marketplace for communities at the base of the pyramid (BoP) by supporting entrepreneurship, connecting partners, and sharing resources. The BoP Solutions Centre is a 30,000 square foot physical space in Singapore that is scheduled to open in 2020 as a global epicenter for BoP business and trade. It will provide a co-working space for social enterprises that promote economic inclusion for disadvantaged communities, an events venue, shared business services, training and mentoring, and support for fundraising. BoP Hub also offers online events, education programs, and services to map and match the resources, tools, and players in the BoP marketplace.

Farming for Nature is a not-for-profit initiative that recognizes and supports farmers who farm, or wish to farm, in a way that will improve the natural health of the countryside. It emerged from experiences working with farmers in the Burren region of western Ireland. The Farming for Nature Award was started to unearth and share the stories of farmers across Ireland who are making a positive difference to nature on their farms and in their communities. There is now a growing network of Farming for Nature Ambassadors who share their knowledge and passion for nature with others, offer farm walks, and participate in “Ask the Farmer” sessions, webinars, workshops, and other events. The Farming for Nature website offers videos, podcasts, publications, links, how-to guides and other resources for policy, research and practice.

They now work with more than 1,200 farmers and process 30 million coconuts a year into virgin coconut oil, coconut milk, coconut cream, coconut flour, coconut flakes and chips, and coconut water. All parts of the coconut are used. Husks are sold and processed into fiber for ropes, doormats, and erosion control, shells are burned to provide biomass energy or sold to produce charcoal and activated carbon, and the oil cake is sold for animal feed. Serendipol supports farmers to transition to regenerative organic methods that enrich the soil, promote biodiversity, improve yields, sequester atmospheric carbon, and increase resilience. Workers have opportunities for personal and professional development and enjoy conditions and compensation above the industry average. The fair trade committee, which includes farmers, workers, and management, has funded nearly 1,000 projects including initial subsidies for compost production, medical equipment for rural clinics, school renovation and vocational training for disadvantaged youth, home improvement grants, restoration of water reservoirs, rural infrastructure, and support for local community groups.

Using recycled plastic reduce carbon emissions by 70 percent and requires 90 percent less water than regular polyester. Each pair of swim shorts keeps 15 plastic bottles out of landfills and the ocean. Mangata works with their manufacturer in Romania to minimize waste in the production process. They use recycled paper packaging, compostable mail bags, and swing tags made from cotton off-cuts. In addition to finding ways to reduce their carbon footprint, they also plant trees on the founder’s family farm to offset emissions. Mangata uses their social media, blog, and newsletter to communicate about environmental issues and encourage their community to make a difference.

WCN’s Nepal Prakriti Pathshala, or Nepal Nature School, is an educational service that makes environmental education more interactive, accessible and innovative. They also developed Nepal’s first wildlife crime database, actively monitor illegal wildlife trade, and share information with enforcement agencies. Their mission is to support women’s empowerment, and they focus on providing employment opportunities to mothers and other women in the region who would otherwise not be able to access work. By bringing the bottled juice to the city, they are able to reach a broader market and make it easier for urban consumers to enjoy fresh juice made from naturally grown local fruit. The glass bottles are collected, sterilized, and reused, and any expired juice is made into natural fertilizer. Falfull partners with other local brands and participates in collective campaigns to raise funds and support people in need.

Serious cases are transferred back to their clinic. The veterinary team also organizes mobile rabies vaccination campaigns. Sneha’s Care actively raises awareness on animal welfare issues, including factory farming, and educates the public on compassionate and humane treatment of animals. They are attempting to introduce an animal welfare law in Nepal with penalties for animal cruelty and abuse. Hasinika Spice & Agro Products is a community producer cooperative in Awissawella, an area known for quality spices and herbs. Most spices and curry powders on the market are processed using modern, heavy equipment which affects taste and nutrition. Hasinika Spice uses traditional hand processing techniques including small-batch roasting and stone milling. Their cooperative society includes 25 families involved in cultivation, processing, packaging, and delivery. People with disabilities are able to work from home. The farming families are paid when the raw spices are purchased. Profits are shared equally among the families involved in the processing. Hasinika offers affordable home delivery. They have used plastic packaging to keep prices low for local consumers, but they are working to offer spices in glass bottles and refillable bulk containers.
